Make a window your brightest room

A few small moves can double the daylight you already have indoors. None of them cost anything.

Most homes have more daylight than they let in. The light is there at the glass; it just never makes it across the room.

Let the window do its work

Pull furniture back from the brightest wall, swap heavy curtains for something the sun can pass through, and keep a pale surface nearby to bounce the light deeper inside.

  • Clean the glass — a dusty pane can cost you a tenth of the light.
  • Place a mirror opposite the window to throw daylight back into the room.
  • Keep the sill clear; one tall plant can shade a surprising amount of floor.
