Our Mission

We exist to help people get the sunlight they were built for.

Sollees is built on a simple belief: humans need sunlight, and most of us aren't getting enough. At Sollees we share the science, make the case for getting outside, and encourage the habits that bring more natural light into daily life.

But we also know modern life has real limits: office hours, urban city life without sky, and long winters. That's why we build products and services that help fill this gap — light designed around human biology, not just visibility.

Sunlight over field

About Us

The heart of the name: Sollees

In Norway, we live between two extremes. The endless days of summer, when the sun barely sets and everything feels alive. And the endless nights of winter — a long, quiet darkness where the absence of light becomes something you feel in your whole body.

Living between those extremes taught us something: sunlight, or “sollys” as we call it in Norwegian, isn't just pleasant. It's powerful. It shapes how we feel, how we sleep, how we function.

That's where our name comes from. So we wanted to build something around that word, around that experience of what sunlight actually is and what it gives you.

But you can't trademark the sun. That is why we did the next best thing: we used its sound and trademarked it.

The Norwegian word sollys is pronounced "SO-lees" — and so, Sollees was born.

  • SOL is for the Sun.
  • EE is for the Endless Days and the Endless Nights that taught us its value.

The name also travels well into English. Solace means comfort, relief, consolation — and that's exactly what we believe natural light offers. Not just brightness, but something the body genuinely needs.

Sollees is our way of standing for that. The science, the habits, the education — and the products we build when the sky isn't available. All of it rooted in the same belief: that people deserve to live with the light their biology was built for.

Products and Services

Behind the scenes, we are deep in the work of product development — building light that doesn't just illuminate, but supports the way human bodies are wired to function. Our focus is on full-spectrum, human-centric technology that brings the real qualities of sunlight indoors. More details to come. We can't wait to share what we're building.

About US

Our Approach: Data, Biology, and Belief

By David Fink, Founder

I need to be honest with you about something. It shapes everything we do at Sollees, and I think it’s important you know where I stand. It’s about the difference between what we can actually observe and the assumptions we build around those observations.

I'm an engineer. My world is about things we can measure and test. But I've learned that even in a technical field like lighting, many industry standards are built on old assumptions, not on hard, measurable biological data.

For example, for decades the standard for an office was just "500 lux." This was based on providing enough light for people to see their work. It was a consensus, but it didn’t ask the deeper question: what does our biology actually need from light? This is where we draw a hard line. We separate observable data from established assumptions.

My Motivation and Our Method

For me, the motivation to ask these deeper questions comes from a personal faith in God. I believe we were created with purpose and love, and to my engineer's mind, that feels like the most logical and probable conclusion. But that is my faith. I don’t ask you to share it, and I recognize that I can’t prove it in a lab. This worldview is what drives me to seek a deeper understanding of the incredible design I see in the human body.

But while my motivation is personal, our method at Sollees is strictly technical and measurable. I am very aware that my worldview shapes the questions I ask. I believe it’s more honest to acknowledge that, rather than pretend to be completely neutral.

That’s precisely why our method must be so strict. We build a firewall between the "why" we are curious and the "what" the data actually shows us. We don’t mix philosophy with our measurements. Our commitment is to let the measurable, biological data speak for itself.

The Unifying Principle

This brings me to the core of our work. Here is something I believe everyone can agree on, no matter their worldview: human biology is exquisitely fine-tuned for our natural environment.

Whether you see this as the result of millions of years of evolution or the work of a creator, the conclusion is the same. Our bodies are built for the rhythms and the full spectrum of natural sunlight.

Because our biology is so complex and finely tuned, any technology that tries to replicate or supplement sunlight must be held to the highest standard of accuracy. We can't rely on guesswork or old assumptions. We have to measure.

Our Promise to You

What you will find here is our honest attempt to navigate this complex world. No dogmas or forced conclusions. We won’t accept an industry standard just because it's "common practice."

Instead, we'll share the data we have, be clear about its limits, and always maintain a deep respect for the boundary between what can be observed and what ultimately is a matter of individual faith.
