What the low winter sun asks of us
Living well at sixty degrees north means making peace with a sun that barely clears the hills. It is more possible than it sounds.

For a few months each year the Nordic sun keeps banker's hours, rising late and leaving early. The instinct is to wait it out. The better move is to go and meet what little light there is.
Chase the few bright hours
When daylight is scarce it becomes precious. Block the brightest part of the day for being outside, even briefly, and let the dark evenings be for rest rather than guilt.
Winter is not a lesser season for light. It is a discipline — and the people who learn it tend to like the dark months more than they expected to.
